Geography

Geography

Cambodia is a country located in Southeast Asia with a total land area of approximately 181,035 square kilometers (69,898 square miles). It is bordered by Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos to the north, Vietnam to the east and southeast, and the Gulf of Thailand to the south.

The land borders are defined by natural features such as rivers and mountains, as well as man-made boundary markers. The sea border lies along the Gulf of Thailand to the south, providing access to maritime trade routes and coastal resources. The coastline stretches for approximately 443 kilometers (275 miles) and includes sandy beaches, mangrove forests, and offshore islands.

Cambodia is characterized by a mix of plains, mountains, rivers, and coastal areas. The central and southern regions of the country are dominated by the fertile plains of the Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake, which provide vital resources for agriculture and fishing. In the north, the Cardamom Mountains and Dâmrei Mountains offer rugged terrain and dense forests, home to a variety of wildlife species.

Cambodia has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The rainy season typically occurs from May to October, bringing heavy rainfall and high humidity. The dry season, from November to April, is characterized by sunny days and cooler temperatures. The country experiences monsoon rains that contribute to the lush greenery and fertile lands that support Cambodia’s agriculture.

Cambodia is home to a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna, with diverse ecosystems ranging from tropical rainforests to mangrove forests. The country’s national parks and protected areas, such as Virachey National Park and Ream National Park, offer opportunities for wildlife viewing and eco-tourism. Cambodia is known for its unique species, including the endangered Indochinese tiger, Asian elephant, and Irrawaddy dolphin.

Cambodia is crisscrossed by several major rivers, including the Mekong River, Tonle Sap River, and Bassac River. These waterways play a crucial role in irrigation, transportation, and fishing activities, sustaining the country’s economy and livelihoods. The Tonle Sap Lake, connected to the Tonle Sap River, is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia.

Cambodia is divided into 25 provinces and the capital city of Phnom Penh. Each province is further subdivided into districts and communes, with local governments responsible for administrative functions such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. Some of the provinces include Siem Reap, Battambang, Kampong Cham, and Sihanoukville.
